About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Chicago’s Lincoln Park, Old Pueblo Cantina is a Mexican restaurant and bar that masterfully blends authentic flavors with a welcoming and lively atmosphere. From the moment you step onto their inviting sidewalk patio at 1200 W Webster Ave, you’ll feel the pulse of a vibrant summer spot where the aromas of fresh spices and grilled goodness beckon you to linger.

Old Pueblo Cantina proudly carries the banner as the “Home of the Cheese Crisp,” and this signature dish truly lives up to its billing. Imagine biting into a perfectly golden, thin, crispy tortilla layered with melted Chihuahua, cotija, and longhorn cheddar cheeses that create an irresistible, gooey texture paired with a subtle tang. Whether you choose the classic queso crisp or one of its delightful variations like Green Chile or Spicy Chorizo, each is a celebration of bold, layered flavors that awaken the palate.

The menu is a treasure trove of Mexican comfort and innovation. Dive into the delicate balance of their Shrimp Tacos – crispy, succulent shrimp crowned with fresh salsa and creamy chipotle mayo – or savor the smoky richness of Adobo Chicken Grilled Skewers. For those who crave heartier fare, dishes like Chicken Enchiladas and Chimichangas offer robust, home-style satisfaction. The Quesabirria Platter, featuring tender braised short rib melted with Chihuahua cheese, is a must-try for barbacoa lovers.

A standout element that customers can’t stop raving about is the homemade tortillas—soft, fresh, and bursting with authenticity, elevating every taco and enchilada to new heights. The freshness resonates in every bite, complementing fillings like carne asada, chicken tinga, or the vibrant blue corn taco plate.

Brunch brings another level of delight with offerings like the Smothered Green Chile Breakfast Burrito and the Carne Seca cheese crisp, which bring bold, comforting flavors to the morning table. And if you want to bring a piece of Old Pueblo home, their “Take And Bake” Queso Bake lets you enjoy their signature cheese crisp on your own time.

To wash down these flavors, the cocktail program shines as brightly as the kitchen. The Cadillac Margarita and the boldly flavored Jalapeño Spicy Margarita perfectly blend traditional Mexican spirits with fresh, invigorating ingredients. Craft beers also flow freely, providing excellent options for any preference.

What truly makes Old Pueblo Cantina exceptional goes beyond the food and drink—it’s the warm hospitality and attentive service. Guests continuously share their enthusiasm for the teams behind the scenes, with frequent shout-outs to staff members like Carlos, Benjamin, Ava, and Tori who create an atmosphere that feels more like a gathering of friends than a night out at a restaurant. Their attentiveness and genuine care ensure every visit feels special.

Regular diners praise the impeccable combination of top-notch food, refreshing margaritas, and a great vibe on the sunny sidewalk patio. Whether you’re craving the irresistible crispy shrimp tacos, chorizo cheese crisp, or just a well-made margarita after a long day, Old Pueblo Cantina delivers a memorable experience that blends tradition with modernity. It’s the kind of place you’ll find yourself returning to again and again, craving its vibrant flavors and welcoming spirit.

Solid food and great sidewalk patio vibe. I really enjoyed the guac and margaritas, which were decently priced. Tacos were delicious and service was swift even being at the last table outside. Shout out Benjamin. Will come back soon, great summer spot.

Wow this place was so great. Everyone was so friendly (shout out to Carlos) and we had a great meal. Margaritas were delicious and we tried the chorizo cheese crisp and crispy shrimp tacos. The flour tortillas were the best I’ve ever had! Highly recommend.

Best restaurant experience I’ve had in a while!! My partner and I decided to stop in after we had passed the restaurant and noticed the “Home of the Cheese Crisp” sign. We were met by Carlos, the manager, who made sure we had a wonderful experience. Our server Ava was amazing, and great at making recommendations. We ordered the mini beef chimis, the fish tacos, and of course the cheese crisp, and they did NOT disappoint. The mini chimis were especially delicious. We will definitely be back!

I can’t believe the price, the quality of the food, or the fantastic service we received. I ordered the mahi mahi, crispy shrimp, and carne asada tacos. They all were great (carne asada was a little bland for my liking), but I can’t stop thinking about how perfect the crispy shrimp was. Highly recommend!

This was my first time at Old Pueblo and I will definitely be going back on a regular basis. My boyfriend and I had such a great time. The food is very authentic, much flavor, and the homemade tortillas are the best we have ever had! All of the staff are so kind and friendly. The manager, Carlos spent much time chatting with us and made us feel so welcome. The bartenders, Tori and Ava were equally as friendly and helpful with drinks and the menu. It was an all around enjoyable evening at a well managed restaurant. We can’t wait to go back for some amazing Mexican food and to see the friendly and outgoing staff!

We came here for taco tuesday which is a great deal. Note that you can’t mix and match tacos on taco tuesday without paying the full price. We got the queso con chorizo which was amazing, shrimp tacos, and red chili beef tacos. The red chili beef tacos were a little bit too spicy for me. The chips and salsa are so amazing too!!
